Use of racial or ethnic classification in medical practice: Are there Genetic Ancestry in Lung-Function Predictions?   published on Wednesday, 14-Jul-10 09:37:13 CEST by misconduct

The work in this weeks New England Journal of Medicine is interesting if you are working on genetic ancestry. It has certainly an explosive effect on race matters. What do you think of relevance of this article on genetic ancestry? Background: Self-identified race or ethnic group is used to determine normal reference standards in the prediction of pulmonary function. We conducted a study to determine whether the genetically determined percentage of African ancestry is associated with lung function and whether its use could improve predictions of lung function among persons who identified themselves as African American. I'm still somehow afraid of the use of racial or ethnic classification in medical practice. This research has certainly been the subject of debate...what do you think?
